Well, I'm not sure myself, as both the English and the American school systems are different from the Croatian... I think a freshman is someone that just started highschool, so his first year (of 4?).
In Croatia we have 8 years of elementary, 4 years of high school (roughly 16-17 obligatory subjects per year!) and then off to university...
Maybe someone could write down how the American and English systems look like? I have a vague image, but was never 100% sure...

To see a world in a Grain of Sand,
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour.

What confuses me is that I think 'high school' means something different in differing countries. Here's the system where I live:

Primary (compulsory): Years 1-6, ages 5-11

High school (secondary, compulsory): Years 7-9 (sometimes years 7-11), ages 12-14 or 12-16. GCSE exams are taken during year 11.

College (not compulsory): Years 12-13 (sometimes year 14 for people who wish to stay on another year), ages 17-18 (sometimes 19). AS and A level exams are taken in years 12-13. Sometimes you get '6th form colleges' which is basically a school that caters for years 10, 11, 12 and 13.

University, then a job. :P

In eastern Canada (it's different in different areas of the country, I think), we have:

Elementary school: Primary (start at age 5) then grade 1 to grade 6
Junior high: grades 7, 8 and 9
High school: grades 10, 11 and 12

Then off to college/university, or the real world, whichever you choose.

In my area of the U.S. it's
K-5 grades are Elementary
6-8 grades are Middle School
9-12 grades are High School

only the high school students are actually recorded for what they do in school. The last 4 years

Meaning comes from within.
