Pets
I donate financially to a local animal shelter, because I just can't afford, emotionally, to actually help out there... I'd be coming home with a new critter every day.

A friend of mine pretty much *does* come home with a new critter every day! Her mother works at a local animal shelter and grabs all sorts back. First it starts off as fostering..And then the kids all whine that they want to keep the pet so they do..
Result? Their house is completely overrun by a multitude of pets. Parrots, kittens, puppies, dogs, rabbits..Everything. :woohoo:

Wow! I hope your friend has a lot of space for all those animals.
Animal hoarding is a pretty bad problem, but I assume your friend isn't a hoarder in that negative sense when their mom works for a shelter...

And a Heaven in a Wild Flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour.

Ahh..My mother worked there for a bit managing finances and she told me anyone from any of the departments there would basically get first pick of any of the animals that needed a home. >.< So all of the purebreeds, unique, expensive or young pets etc. would be gone in a flash due to workers.
It is a bit unfair and you know that it'll be the same in all of the shelters, but if the pets get a home, well..A home is a home. Plus workers often bring their pets into work with them to interact with all the other animals there/keep them company and they all generally get free vet checks regularly too (vet comes in for a day to check the animals, everyone sticks their pet in front of the vet whilst they're there etc.), so the health of the pets is pretty good even when everyone has a million of them.
I guess it helps with reducing overcrowding as well and all the food is generally donated (with donations being increasingly small during the last few years) so that's another problem gone if pets are being re-homed quickly..

I agree. A home is a home.
I think the people that work in shelters here don't really adopt so many animals that they get.
My opinion is based on just watching the web pages with the animals up for adoption. I saw a load of purebreeds (even purebreed puppies) being on the website for months before they got adopted. Maybe people here just aren't so fond of adopting animals yet. Don't know how to explain it otherwise...
