What an MMORPG is? A massively multiplayer online role-playing game, a game that uses an internet connection to play on a server where even millions can tap into and play. These are not \"linear\" games where you just go from point A to point B and MMOs cannot' be \"completed\" there are usually hundreds of missions/quests that reward experience points (exp or xp), killing hostiles usually grants experience as well, quests can often be done alone and some require a group of players. Experience is used to level up the character when a certain amount is achieved, leveling up grants a boost in abilities' efficiency therefore making the character more powerful, some MMORPGs will grant bonus points that can be placed manually in \"talent trees\" to customize the abilities of the character. There are different classes the player can select while creating the character (magic users, assassins, warriors, archers, etc.) There is a level cap where experience points are no longer obtainable which is a point where players work on aquiring better gear (armour, weapons, other items), items are very often rewarded from missions as well as currency, currency and gear can also be lotted from slain hostiles, in many mmorpgs at the level cap, there are zones that require a large group of players to fight their way through to the end where a boss is fought, which can be looted for top quality gear, these zones are called dungeons or instances and the gear looted form the boss usually cannot be traded to other players once it is picked up, most gear can be traded and many mmorpgs have an \"auction where people can set an item, a price and a time til expire. Many mmorpgs have \"PVP\" player vs player where people fight each other, few games allows you to loot fallen players and many award points (honor, etc.) which can be exchanged for PVP gear (gear provides an armour rating to reduce damage recieved and stat points to augment players' abilities), PVP gear usually has stats to increase damage caused and increase maximum health points. PVE (player vs enviroment) is combat against game hostiles, non-player-controlled (npc) and the stats on gear usually involve an insane amount of damage modifiers since in group combat, a warrior class keeps the attention of the npc (often called a mob) while the rest of the group kills it. the warrior class (tank) has the heaviest armor, highest health points and has abilities to increase \"threat\" ( keeps the mob's attention on it while the group does more damage).
And there's my summary, a bit not in order but the outline is all there.

in short he means many people play online against (or with) eachother doing quests and the like to 'lvl up' to be ranked first outta every1 and be the best...and luagh at the inferior.. game xp to lvl and kill things and do quest to lvl. obviously as keseluk said u need weapons and armours to kill things.
a game such a Runescape is a MMORPG
kinda fun, but after a while the games do lose edge, plus side they think of new things to improve them
