My roommate has stated that Steam Punk is the new Goth, and I enjoy the direction it is going as well. What is your take on the evolution of a positive growing trend?

I don't agree that it's the new goth, and surely not Goth with a capital G.
I see it just like another subgroup of the gothic subculture. Like we were discussing it in the old topic (I naturally already merged both), I see it as basically cyberpunk with another colour scheme, I don't say they are identical just with other colours. Steampunk does have a bit more elegance to it then cyberpunk, but saying it's the new goth is veary far fetched in my eyes.

You have fallen into the torment of the Reverend Knumpcy once again. I shall give a quick rant and try to be polite, but fur may fly. Roommate quote \"Telling a black metal band that they are a bit more aggravated than a Rolling Stones band, wait they are both rock and roll.\"

Seriously though in the Goth Culture there are the elitists and the want to Be's or the commercialism driven. Though there are many subcultures thrown into the Mainstream Goth term (which is saddening), we can go on this til we kill each other.

The place I am living at is so middle American that it is quite depressing and not in the good way, but hey there are plenty of graveyards to haunt and I am trying to visit them all and try to find some decent photo's to share. Have a Brilliant week and may the ookie spookies tickle your fancy!

I became insane with long intervals of horrible sanity

*facepalm*

Does someone need a lecture on the differences between a subculture and a trend?

So we have the culture of a country, for example.
In that country's culture, we have subcultures. Simple enough?
Every culture has it's trends in fashion.
I won't go into detail why, because I'm not doing a degree in sociology and it's not important in bringing across my point.
So those \"mainstream\" girls see in Cosmopolitan, for example, that this summer pink is the \"it\" colour of the season and a lot of those girls will get pink stuff.
Now, we have goths who don't have a fashion trend every season, but maybe every couple of years.
Rremember chalk-white face make up could be seen at every goth club, now that trend isn't so wide spread.
So, these last few years steampunk has started to become trendy among the goth subculture.
You have steampunk themed parties, a lot of people cosplay it, but you don't see anyone in full steampunk mode grocery shopping on a everyday basis, becasue to be steampunk you have to have all those nice fancy brass gadgets, because without those you're just victorian and that's a long standing style among goths...

ah, I don't have the energy to write anymore about this, have better stuff to do... bye!

To see a world in a Grain of Sand,
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour.

Saw an amazing hat which was listed as 'steampunk', but I feel the base colour is wrong, which ruins it a bit. Nonetheless, it's an amazing hat.

What annoyed me the most was the price. Anything remotely steampunk seems to be 10x the price of everything else..

I think some of the high steampunk prices are due to the fact that a lot of the items are handmade, original, and one of a kind. That's sort of the whole idea behind steampunk, that you are completely unique, not buying something off the rack to wear, but buying or making something simple, and then changing it completely, adding buckles, attachments, brass, and buttons. In that sense, a lot of steampunk can be very inexpensive, if you have access to a good supply of gears, brass buttons and buckles, etc. Buying pre-made steamy accessories can get expensive, but DIY can be fun and cheap.

Nothing to see here, move along folks.

True. I just wish I was more accustomed to metalwork. I'd love to experiment a bit, but my steampunky creativity goes as high as a bottle of model glue and watch cogs. :woohoo: Not to mention, we don't generally have scrap metal/metal parts lying around anyway.

The little row of bullets on that hat completely baffle me. If they were handmade, then - wow. That must've taken a long time. I thought they might've been a painted part of a model tank or something, but I couldn't find anything like it.

Envy, you could try something like this:

www.bewild.com/mibubeb.html

Or go down to a local model/hobby shop that sells miniatures for recreating war scenes and the like. Also, a sewing shop will have rivet setters, metal buckles, etc., not to mention awesome buttons.\\

For the umpteenth time, I really have to start sewing again...

Nothing to see here, move along folks.
