The Monk by Matthew Lewis i coulndn't put it down for days.

Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night, may become a wolf when the wolfsbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright.

December, and Candle Night. Both by Phil Rickman, whose writing style I really like. I'd call them horror/suspense, and they're pretty fast-paced, but not dumbed down at all.

Signal to Noise and A Signal Shattered, both by Eric Nylund. I'd like to call him my favorite writer...

I also like the books by Nick Perumov, now on the third book that is clearly the best so far.
And just to say, I like books and stories because the feelings they make. The better the feelings in it (not the one the characters feel, but the one the reader gets) the better the book will be... quality is a must tho, but I know people that don't like the first books just because of lack of quality, so guess it's about taste as well...

My beauty is not the shape of the body,
but the voices in you mind;
the thoughts you can't live without
