I know there were nasty punishments even for petty crimes: if a man stole money, he would have his hand put into a cauldron with boiling water, and if he stole something from a house by forcing an entry, he would be eligible for death. And death came much more cruelly then. I've heard there might still be countries nowadays that use lapidation (kiling somebody by throwing stones at them) as a form of punishment and I think in muslim countries infidel women are still put to death, but I'm not sure of that.

I live in México if we have the Death Penalty for crimes like Drug dealers, kidnappers, im so sure that people will start with a honest life

well in italy doesn't exist torture or death penalty..
but i think that for some crimes committed in italy there are so little punishments..
for heavy crimes few years of prison..and back in the life..
i think if there was something like death penalty, people thinks too times before to do crimes!

I think it wouldn't change a lot if there was a death penalty. Just think of the USA with their death penalty and crime rates. People usually think about not getting caught before committing a crime, not how big will the penalty be if they catch them.

Doubt the Death Penelty helps that much.

Sure, some of the older generations may claim that when we had the death penelty here in the U.K. crime rates were lower, however I doubt that. Today with the 24 hour news culture we live in, crimes are being more widely reported in the media, before this all arrived, you'd more than likely only hear about more local things rather than stuff from all around the country.

Plus in the end, I believe it costs more to sentence someone to death? If someone could confirm this, it would be great.

I am strictly against torturing any being. It is profane.
I strongly believe that no-one has the right to choose wether a human being's life is worthless and that it should be taken from them. Nobody is capable of evaluating life and nobody should be authorised to do so. Therefore, it is in my opinion that the Death Penalty should be banned.

One exception about the torturing part, though.

I HATE PAEDOPHILES AND RAPISTS. THEY ARE SICK, TWISTED SCUM. Maybe they should be tortured as a punishment for the sick things they've done.....mmmm....say, chop their genitals slowly into small parts or maybe the Judas Cradle would be an appropriate punishment for them. Don't you think?

I think that pretty much everyone feels the same way regarding paedophiles/rapists. Where I live, paedophiles have to have a separate wing in prisons because 'normal' prisoners would beat the *beep* out of them if given the chance.

Personally/Morally, I feel that any person who does sickening things as stated above *or* takes the life of another should be given the same treatment.

In all honesty, if I ran the country, I'd make every criminal suffer the same thing that they've inflicted upon others. Treat others as you wish to be treated. WELL - People would almost definately follow that principle if my rules were enforced!

My only exceptions would be if there were unique circumstances/accidents/substantial mental health issues at hand, and even then, it would depend on the circumstance/accident/mental condition.
