I get a lot of linens and cutlery sets from my grandma for my birthday(s). She still believes in the whole dowry payment thingy for marriage. Personally, her preparing for a future wedding scares me.
Don't worry. My mom scares me more. She has been buying me jewelry since I was a kid, just in case I ever needed cash fast. Strange, but true. She figured if I was ever in trouble, I could sell my jewelry. I know, depressing way to look at life. But I have sold some of it, right after my first marriage ended. So it was useful. But at least buying a dowry is a positive, hopeful view of the future!
Nothing to see here, move along folks.

Even if you don't get married for a long time, if ever, you'll still have lots of things to set you up when you get your own place. I started buying things when I was about 16, in preparation for moving out on my own. Not a whole lot, but if I saw dishes or towels on sale, I'd grab them and stash them away, rather than having to buy everything all at once.

I sort of did something like this, too. I found a set of cooking pots on sale, and bought them when I was 17. And a few other household things that I knew I would need eventually. Maybe I will start doing that for Lucy when she is too old to keep toys in her toybox, I can turn it into a hope chest for her.

Hmm, come to think of it, in Chinese culture, every baby is given a gold bracelet once they're born. I have a few hidden away somewhere.
When I was living with my ex, he bought items on the idea that they'd be 'for life'..It led to him buying the best of the best. >.< It was all social security money, which is what I hated.
