Churriguera: An influential family of Spanish architects and sculptors from early 17th and late 18th century Madrid and Salamanca, noted for their uniquely elaborate and flamboyant style of Baroque sculpture and architecture. Their most notable work includes the exuberant design of the Colegio de Calatrava and the Plaza Mayor, both located in Salamanca. This distinctive style became known as Churrigueresque.

Doré, Paul Gustave, (pronounced Doray): French artist and engraver of the 19th century, famed for his fine, dramatic and passionate illustrations of works by Lord Byron, Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven, Dante’s Divine Comedy, and illustrated copies of the English Bible, to name but a few.

Catafalque: Originating from the Italian catafalco, or ‘scaffolding’. A raised platform, used to support the newly-filled coffins or caskets of the recently deceased during their funereal ceremonies.

Carmen: The tragic heroine of Georges Bizet’s famous opera. A beautiful, tempestuous gypsy who predicted her own death through card readings; her flirtatious and devious nature led to her eventual downfall at the hands of her scorned lover.
