:P Hah! And I thought I was the only one. ^.^ Some shopkeepers hate it though..If they don't have a 'Do not touch' sign, I will generally poke around..It's the most fun in soft-toy stores, where I rearrange all the toys on the shelves and give every one a bit of a squish.

I used to remember going into stores that sold cheap, man-made stones where you could just pick what you wanted and fill a bag. I used to love running my hands through the barrel of stones because they were cool and nice to feel.

There was a store in Alaska which sold polished hematite like that..And the magnetic kind. It wasn't what I was looking for though..I just wanted a hematite ring. :(

Alrighty, I've studied Witchcraft for a few years as well as other Pagan religions and the psychological effects connected to objects, prayers and rituals.

Only a few stones, metals and crystals actually have a medicinal effect, some can purify blood etc. Nothing fancy but, others can have a great placebo like effect due to the belief. Unlike standard placebo effects that people hear of in hospitals and use of medications, it is not limited to temporarily feeling better. Psychologically, it is possible to maintain the placebo and improve the effects, the body can heal itself, it can isolate an anomaly and correct it much more easily with placebo. Faith in something that is only said to be able to cure can greatly strengthen a placebo. The healing is real, but it comes from the mind and is maintained by the focus on that which is said to have power.

Amethyst is only regarded as a healing stone by folk superstition and giftshop owners. Though many occult books have differrent listed properties for different stones, etc. Amethyst is most know for having the properties in purifying and balancing energies, a source of mystical energy (for rituals, prayers, channeling), promote peace, happiness, attract money, protection and love (if engraved with a cupid).

People who have faith in amethyst as a healing crystal will recieve the placebo effect of healing depending on how strong their faith is in it and their focus, though as it is faith that gives us these effects, a stone or crystal is not even needed for the power they are said to contain but, are greatly helpful for a focus point.

One of my stories: Due to me having grown tall at a young age (I was 6 feet tall in grade 6), I would get extreme, crippling migraines about every six months, once with a sleeping pill side effect I was even hospitalized for a day. July was the last time I had a migraine but, with my knowledge of placebo, I could dull it down to barely noticable (I studied for three years on the psychological effects of faith).

I am an atheist but, I respect Witchcraft highly.

^.^ I'm quite happy. I got a reply from Alchemy about stockists in Leicester and found out that 'The Gem Tree' which is an online shop I've had a peek at a few times is actually based here and has a shop in the local indoor market.

I wasn't expecting this info here! :silly: Maybe that shop has also some hematite rings for you in addition to Alchemy stuff. ;)

Yes! That's what I'm hoping for! Supposedly they specialise in homemade jewellery, and I've looked on their online store and they do sell rough-cut crystals! They also sell little wire cages for stones and obsidian arrowheads, which I'm quite interested in. :P

I'm completely surprised that I've never known about this shop before..The fact I first found out about it online and not out in town is very odd.
