To put it simple: Manga are Japanese comics, while anime are Japanese cartoons.
It's more complax then that, as manga is in itself an art style...
A series can be done only as a manga and never become an anime and vica versa.
Example: Vampire Hunter D is originaly a series of novels, which then spawned anime, manga and other adaptations. Vampire Hunter
Bloodlust is based on the 3rd novel of the series.
