It's one of the few story lines I wish the bad guy (the phantom) would of won.
To me he loved her so much he was willing to do anything.
I guess i will chalk it up as a tragic story but...dangett people...
I say some one remake it and let him win

I agree! I also wanted the Phantom to win!

Isn't that called an \"anti-hero\"? Where the supposed bad guy is the main character, and the reader/audience usually ends up wishing for him to win? I know there's some kind of specific term for that type of character...

Not really. An Anti-hero is your usual good guy, but with a less heroic aura about him/her. It's becoming more and more common in this day and age vs stories from long, long ago. Basically it's like Batman and Superman. Superman is the perfect hero, always pure and good while Batman has a shadowed past and is dark, while still the good guy.
Erik, or the phantom, was still the antagonist, but he was the titular character; meaning he was the character that the movie/book/play was really about, good or bad.

Meaning comes from within.
