I agree on Ibsen's Doll's House. It was very controversial when it was first published, I recall that Ibsen even had to rewrite the ending for some theatre becasue the producer thought it wouldn't play well with the original ending...

Oh..I never knew there was a re-written ending. Wonder which version I've read. Probably the approved one, but still. I'd love to see both endings. Especially because in the version I have, it's a veeery stark contrast in Nora's character..I just didn't see it coming at all. :blink:

Makes me wonder whether the original ending would've been more similar to what I had predicted early on in Act One - Although having a rewritten ending would explain all of the leads that aren't used in the concluding Act that I thought were going to be used.

I thought it was brilliant nonetheless.

The alternative ending isn't anything special. Ibsen didn't like the alternative ending at all, felt it was a disgrace, but he was forced into writing it because it was assumed the theatre play wouldn't do well in Germany? with the original ending. You must be aware that at that time emancipation wasn't at the stage it is now...
Basically in this alternative ending, Nora is led to her children after having argued with Torvald. Seeing them, she collapses, and the curtain is brought down.

Oh wow..That wasn't nearly the exciting ending I had pictured in my mind!

In fact, it's extremely bland..At least with the ending I presume is in every student edition of the play, there's a sense of hope and freedom for Nora at the end, as opposed to that ending where it appears as if she's still the weak and feeble character she's been basically all the way through..

I was hoping for something like Christine and Nils ruining the Helmers for their own benefit (basically working together and deciding not to send the follow-up letter), and Nora having a horrible ending in a jail/Torvald having his career ruined..Though that doesn't have the nice effect of Nora finally waking up to see the real world.
