"The Animist" by Eve Forward. Then again, I probably just like it so much because rodents play such a prominent role in it.

The Possessed by Dostoyevsky (I guess that's the English spelling of his name), it's a bit har to follow but it's a masterpiece.

The Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks. I've never read a series more enticing than that one. I'm sure I'll find something better sometime in the future but for now I can't think of a single book I've read better than those.
